Salt water intrusion risks, safety checks

Post by ARPE » Wed Feb 20, 2019 4:21 pm

I decided to create this thread to bring to our attention items that we should inspect to increase our boating safety. The focus of the thread is on items that could lead to salt water intrusion and how to reduce the chances of severe damages or even sinking.

The kick-off items I have in mind are:
1) What type of high-water alarm does your boat have?
2) How many bilge pumps and what are their rated capacity?
3) If you have a/c, what is the water flow of your a/c raw water pump?
4) Are the saltwater hoses double clamped and of appropriated type?
5) Are the hoses wrinkle-free?
6) Are the fittings safe for saltwater?
7) Are your below waterline thruhulls connected to seacocks?
8) Do you leave your boat unattended in a wet slip with seacocks open?

Regarding (6) Are the fittings safe for saltwater? I have seen on mine and on friends' boats PVC.

This is what I got from https://www.proboat.com/2010/04/the-sta ... -seacocks/
"Hardware throughout the raw-water system should be fully compatible with exposure to seawater. Usually this means bronze (brass should never be installed, because of its zinc content); however, proprietary glass-reinforced plastics such as Marelon are also well suited to seacock and raw-water applications. Avoid PVC; its tensile strength is not high enough to rely on to keep a vessel afloat. Also, conventional 300-series stainless steel is not ideal because of its propensity for crevice corrosion."

My R40 has all below waterline fittings and valves made of bronze, except the one hose-2-thread shown in the picture.

Regarding (5) Are the hoses wrinkle-free?

Needless to say, wrinkles put stress on hoses and need to be avoided; at least when the hose is utilized below waterline.
